Create a Home Wildfire Prevention Plan

For many of us in the Catskill Mountains, living nestled among the trees is exactly where we want to be. Yet, as our climate warms and dry conditions become more prevalent, the risk of wildfire encroaches further into these idyllic settings. Lately, it seems that global warming is resulting in more rainfall in our area. We’ve seen more violent storms and even tornado warnings! But climate change promises to be anything but predictable. All it takes is a few droughty summers, and the accumulated dead wood on the forest floor could become wildfire fuel. Is it possible to prepare for a series of dry summers, especially when we're reeling from destructive rainstorms?


For some time, I had a vague idea about creating a proactive wildfire prevention plan for my home. The idea was planted when I happened to notice my neighbor’s field across the mountain engulfed in flames, actively being battled by multiple fire departments. The cause turned out to be a tree branch rubbing against a power line. I called NYSEG to come trim our trees. Two years later, they finally did.

Then, at a Sunday brunch, friends recounted returning from a trip abroad to hear that their area was ablaze. It was the Peekamoose fire, which wound up consuming 600 acres. Driving home, they braced for the worst, only to find their house had been saved by the tireless efforts of firefighters. Another impetus was a firefighter, whobtold me about an autumn wildfire that was drawing near a house and was stopped just in time. The homeowners had landscaped with ferns, which had turned into crispy firestarters.


I did a little research and discovered that most wildfires in New York State are caused by humans. Burn bans have apparently been effective, but there remain ridiculous sources of ignition, such as boat trailers whose dragging chains generate sparks on the pavement.


I decided to get a little more proactive about creating a plan. While nothing can make the woods entirely fireproof, a well-executed strategy can significantly increase a home's chances of survival and ease the burden on emergency responders. Here’s a blueprint you may choose to follow to create your own plan. I have added my sources at the end so that you can dive deeper if you so choose.


Understanding the Wildfire Threat to Your Property

Living in or near natural areas means you're in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), where human development meets wildland fuels. These areas, while beautiful, are inherently prone to wildfire. The fact is that most homes ignite not from direct flame contact, but from flying embers. These fiery particles can travel for miles ahead of a blaze, finding their way into your home’s vulnerable spots. Radiant heat from nearby burning vegetation or structures is another significant threat.


So where to begin? Clearing vegetation around power lines is basic fire prevention hygiene but can be dangerous work and should not be attempted by homeowners. However, there are many actions you can take that will help you build an effective defense.


 

Creating Defensible Space: The Home Ignition Zone (HIZ)

The cornerstone of any Home Wildfire Prevention Plan is creating and maintaining Defensible Space. This is the buffer zone around your home and other structures designed to reduce fire intensity and stop or slow the spread of wildfire. It's often referred to as the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ), encompassing your house and everything within 100 to 200 feet surrounding it. The HIZ is divided into three critical zones:

 

Immediate Zone (0-5 feet): The Non-Combustible Perimeter

This is the most crucial zone. Within five feet of your structures—that would be your house, decks, and outbuildings—absolutely no flammable materials should exist.

  • Ideally, you would remove all vegetation, firewood, outdoor furniture, and other combustibles.

  • Opt for hardscaping like gravel, pavers, concrete, or non-combustible mulch.

  • Crucially, all vent openings (attic, foundation, eaves) must be covered with 1/16 or 1/8 inch metal mesh to prevent embers from entering and igniting your home from within – this is paramount for Ember Protection. Fiberglass or plastic mesh can melt and burn, so metal is essential.

  • Keep roofs, gutters, and decks clear of leaves, pine needles, and other debris.

 

Intermediate Zone (5-30 feet): The Lean, Clean, and Green Zone

Here, your goal is a well-maintained landscape that reduces fire spread and intensity.

  • Maintain healthy, well-spaced vegetation. Remove "ladder fuels" – anything that can carry fire from the ground into the tree canopy.

  • Keep lawns mowed to four inches or less and well-watered.

  • Thin trees and shrubs, ensuring proper spacing. For example, trees 30-60 feet from the home should have at least 12 feet between canopy tops.

  • Many Catskills properties feature old stone walls, which may serve as natural fuel breaks, creating additional defensible zones. Remove branches that have fallen across the walls.

 

Extended Zone (30-100 feet and beyond): Reducing Fire Intensity

In this outermost zone, the aim is to reduce wildfire intensity as it approaches your property.

  • Continue thinning and pruning vegetation, removing dead materials, and breaking up continuous fuel sources.

  • Firewood piles and propane tanks should be placed on non-combustible pads at least 30 feet from structures.

  • Beyond 100 feet, you can further reduce fuel loads by selectively thinning vegetation, particularly on slopes, where fire travels faster uphill.


Hardening Your Home's Structure Against Wildfire

Beyond the landscape, Home Hardening focuses on making your actual structure resistant to ignition. This involves selecting fire-resistant materials and sealing vulnerable points.

  • Roofing: Use fire-resistant roofing materials like metal, tile, or composition shingles.

  • Siding: Opt for non-combustible materials like stucco, fiber cement, or treated wood.

  • Windows: Install multi-pane windows, ideally with tempered glass, to resist radiant heat.

  • Vents: As mentioned, ensure all vents have fine metal mesh (1/8 inch or less) for effective Ember Protection.

  • Decks and Porches: Use fire-resistant decking materials. If your deck is wood, ensure the area beneath it is completely clear of debris and consider enclosing it with non-combustible screening.

  • Access for Firefighters: Ensure your driveway is wide enough for two vehicles to pass and that your 911 address is clearly visible from the road. If you have gates, they should open inwards to accommodate emergency equipment.


Advanced Protection: Exploring Aluminized Structure Wrap (ASW)

Thinking of the heat shields that firefighters use in the field, I wondered why there couldn't be a shield for the house. My idea was that it would be rolled up aat the top of the roof, unfurling like a blanket in an emergency. Turns out, that’s an active area of research and commercial development.

This concept exists in the form of Aluminized Structure Wrap (ASW). This innovative material features an aluminum surface that reflects over 95% of radiant heat and a non-flammable, heat-resistant fabric for thermal insulation. It prevents structures from reaching ignition temperature and seals against flying embers, the leading cause of home destruction in wildfires.


Companies like Firezat, FireGuard and FireFoil already sell ASW to homeowners. While my automated, roof-mounted deployment system doesn't yet exist as a consumer product (facing engineering challenges like weight, wind, anchoring, and automated triggering), manual deployment is a proven, viable option. Consider purchasing an ASW kit to store on your property, ready for manual deployment on vulnerable walls or deck junctions before evacuation. It's like a storm shutter system for fire, and the science backs its effectiveness. Just don’t wait until a fire emergency to open the kit and practice using it.


Emergency Preparedness: Evacuation Plans and Kits

Even with the best prevention, a wildfire can still threaten your home, making an evacuation plan essential. A well-rehearsed Wildfire Evacuation Plan can be the difference between safety and disaster.

  • Ready, Set, Go!: Familiarize yourself with this national program. "Ready" means preparing your home and family, "Set" means being aware of current conditions and preparing to leave, and "Go!" means evacuating immediately when ordered.

  • Emergency Kit (Go-Bag): Prepare a kit with essential supplies for at least 72 hours. This should include water, non-perishable food, first aid, medications, copies of important documents, flashlights, a radio, and warm clothing.

  • Pet Plan: Include pet food, water, carriers, and leashes in your kit. Place a pet alert window cling to inform first responders.

  • Practice: Regularly practice your evacuation route and emergency plan with your household, especially if you have children, elderly family members, or those with special needs. Wildfires move fast, and you may only have minutes to leave.


Community Engagement and Ongoing Maintenance

Wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility. Engaging with your neighbors and community can multiply your efforts.

  • Firewise Communities: These programs encourage neighbors to work together, share best practices, and collectively reduce wildfire risks.

  • Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPPs): These plans are developed collaboratively by local citizens and agencies to address wildfire response, hazard mitigation, and community preparedness in the WUI.

  • Ongoing Maintenance: Your Home Wildfire Prevention Plan isn't a one-time project. Regular maintenance of your Defensible Space, monitoring local burn bans, and staying informed about changing fire conditions are crucial.


By taking these steps – understanding the threat, creating defensible space, hardening your home, exploring advanced protections, preparing for evacuation, and engaging with your community – you can significantly reduce your property's vulnerability and contribute to a safer environment for everyone.

While the task can seem daunting, breaking it down into manageable steps makes it achievable. And it can be done over time. Currently, the Catskill Mountains are experiencing excessive rainfall. But the thing about Climate Change is that it changes.  It may not be such a bad idea to get going with your Home Wildfire Prevention Plan.
